The effects of Acid Reflux
Acid reflux may sound simple but can lead to a long-term problem, if not taken care of well in time.
Heartburn: A burning pain that moves up from the stomach to the chest. It can also feel like acid indigestion.
Regurgitation: A sour or bitter taste in the mouth or throat, or the sensation of acid backing up into the throat.
Noncardiac chest pain: Pain in the esophagus that feels like heart-related pain.
Sore throat: A sore throat that feels like there’s a lump in the throat, or like it’s hard to swallow.
Asthma symptoms: Chronic coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
Complications of GERD
Ulcers: Sores on the esophagus that can bleed and make swallowing painful.
Esophageal scarring: The esophagus becomes scarred and narrowed, making swallowing difficult.
Barrett’s esophagus: Changes in the cells lining the esophagus that can sometimes progress into esophageal cancer.
